It was sheer coincidence that a high-level business delegation from Tehran arrived in India just when the deal with the G6 plus Germany on the temporary easing of sanctions against Iran was signed.

The delegation’s visit to India was planned much earlier, primarily to ease the bottlenecks trade between India and Iran has been facing lately.

“Trade between the two countries accounts for just $13.5 billion,” said Vijay Kalantri, president of All India Association of Industries, which had hosted a meeting between members of the delegation and Indian businessmen. “But if the bottlenecks are removed, there is no doubt that this number could swell beyond $30 billion within the next two years,” he said.

The sentiment was echoed by Masood Ebrahim Khaleghi, consul general of the Islamic Republic of Iran. “The two biggest challenges we face is finding ways and means to finance the trade, and getting visas more easily from the Indian embassy there. True, last year the Indian Consulate in Iran issued some 40,000 visas. But this could go up to 400,000, promoting both people contacts and tourism between the two countries.”

Yahya Ale-es-hagh (pictured), president, Teheran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, said, “We have come here to look at ways in which we could promote business in several areas – notably petrochemicals including gas and oil, energy, pharmaceuticals, banking and financial institutions, food & agro, water treatment, textiles, telecommunications cables, metals, engineering, medical equipment, tea, construction, town planning, infrastructure and airports.”

“Our team of banking experts will also be meeting key RBI officers to find out ways to solve our banking difficulties,” he said.
