Income Tax Department issues detailed circular to address tax grievances

To address grievances of taxpayers, the I-T Department today put in place a detailed framework for 'verification and correction' of the outstanding tax demand, while rectifying the inaccuracies arising due to delayed or non-reporting of TDS (Tax Deduct at Source).

Such mismatch can arise due to inaccurate or delayed reporting of TDS by the deductors, including the employers.

"In order to swiftly and accurately resolve such grievances, the CBDT has issued a comprehensive Circular ....," the Finance Ministry said in a statement.

The circular explains various steps taxpayers need to take to view and submit their responses with regard to their outstanding tax demand, it added.

Taxpayers may view their outstanding tax demand on their e-filing account at www.Incometaxindiaefiling.Gov.In and follow the steps elucidated in the circular to submit their response either agreeing with or disputing the demand.

About 95% of entries involve demands up to Rs 1 lakh and about 90 per cent of such assessees are individuals and HUFs.
