IITs to ban six start-ups from campus placements

The 16 Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) colleges in the country, may bar as many as six start-ups from recruiting its students, a LiveMint report has said. The stern move comes after more than one start-up recently withdrew or deferred job offers given to students. 

The decision was taken at the All IIT Placement Committee meeting held recently in Mumbai. 

The names of the start-ups that may face a year-long ban from campus placements have, however, been withheld. 

Flipkart came under major fire recently for pushing the joining dates of nearly 18 IIT students by six months. To justify this, Flipkart ​cited business restructuring as the reason for the move and later offered a Rs 1.5 lakh joining bonus at the request of the college. 

Apart from Flipkart, other start-ups like InMobi had also deferred their joining dates to November this year from the earlier promised joining in July.

While initially, all limelight was on start-ups that have recently thronged major colleges to pick up the top talent, L&T Infotech recently cancelled 1,500 job offers given out to engineering college students.

As it stands, the ban from campus placements will only be for one year (2016-17). The start-ups will be allowed to recruit from IIT next year but not before they appear before the placement committee.

The LiveMint report says that even companies that pushed back their joining dates or withdrew the offers citing unfavourable business environment will face a campus recruitment ban.
