Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL), the Tata group hospitality flagship, is expanding its mid-segment hotel brand Gateway  in Tier 2 and 3 cities, becoming the first 5-star property in most cases.

About 17-18 properties under the Gateway brand are under construction; four were added in the past one year while another five would be opened in the coming 12 months, adding 450 keys to the inventory of about 2,400 now, officials said.

“If a brand has to grow then the strategy is the more hotels you have the better known the brand is. The strategy is to proliferate the brand in all destinations identified as hot-spots, places which are growing and cities which needs to be introduced,” Deepa Misra Harris, senior vice-president, sales of Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, said.

The brand would be increasingly cashing in on the demand for marriage halls and other social gathering in such destinations, which means all new Gateways will have bigger banquets.

That explains why the brand Gateway is being taken to a place like Damdama in Gurgaon and also Raipur apart from an in-demand destination like Pune in the next year, said Prabhat Verma, chief operating officer of The Gateway Hotels, at the launch of the brand’s 197-room property at Kolkata.

Gateway would open in religious destinations like Tirupati and Shirdi apart from places such as Kolhapur.
