As many as nine new jetties are likely to come up in the coastal state of Goa to decongest it's road. The move is likely to drastically bring down cargo traffic from the road to promote coastal shipping of cargo.
An initial survey by Public Works Department (PWD) of Goa has short-listed nine locations for have new jetties, namely, Raibander, Old Goa or Divar, Banastarim, Borim, Shiroda, Durbhat, Cortalim or Rassaim, Aldona and Bicholim. Now, a detailed project report will be prepared on these nine jetties, a consultant for the same will be appointed soon.
"The traffic on the roads has increased manifolds. Due to high density of traffic and narrow roads, accidents on roads are also increasing. With this in mind, state PWD has carried out survey to explore the possibilities of construction of jetties on the strategic routes of Aldona – Panaji, Cortalim – Durbhat – Panaji, Pilgao – Panaji and Diwar – Chodan – Panaji. This will take off the cargo traffic from the road and will promote coastal shipping of cargo," read a report by Indian Ports Association on development of jetties in Goa.
Inland waterways is the cheapest mode of transport and it has greater potential in the state of Goa. The state government has initiated refurbishing-cum-strengthening of existing jetties in the state. Goa has vast water land, and many existing islands are thickly populated.
"At present, government is operating ferry services for commuters. Prior to the liberation of state i.e. during Portuguese rule, there was tremendous demand for inland waterways transport. Passenger boats were plying in various places which were locally known as "gasoline". Due to subsequent development of state after liberation, the demand was reduced and due to high maintenance cost government had to shut down the operation," reads the report.
Constructing new jetties will give a fillip to the inland waterways project and revive the discontinued operation within the state.
Although the Union government declared six rivers of Goa as National Waterways (NW) – Mandovi (NW 68), Chapora (NW 25), Zuari (NW 111), Sal (NW 88), Cumbarjua (NW 27) and Mapusa (NW 71), as part of the first phase the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) plans to invite bids only for Mandovi (NW 68), Cumberjua (NW 27) and Zuari (NW 111) rivers.
