Ford India on Tuesday announced the recall of 20,752 units of EcoSport – its sub-4-metre compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) – over concerns of fuel and vapour line corrosion.

Ford India will inspect EcoSport variants, made at the company's Chennai plant between January 2013 and September 2014, for concerns of fuel and vapour line corrosion in the long-term.

"The company will also check the vehicles for reorienting wiring harness related to the correct deployment of side airbags," the company said in a statement.

"For their peace of mind, we have initiated a field service action to correct product concerns on 20,752 Ford EcoSport vehicles in India. This is a proactive, voluntary recall action to ensure customers' safety and satisfaction, the statement said.

The company is contacting customers for the free-of-cost necessary rework, which can be done at company's local dealer outlets.

According to reports, the company last week had recalled India-made EcoSport in Australia for issues related to the wiring harness that connects the curtain airbags, seatbelt pretensioner and side impact sensor. A total of 2,804 units of EcoSport manufactured between 15 June, 2013 and 26 August, 2014 in India, have been recalled in Australia.

While in India last month, the company recalled 3,072 diesel variants of Ford Fiesta sedan for a faulty glow plug control module.

This year has been a year of recalls for the industry with most players announcing recalls under the Voluntary Recall Code, which was adopted by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers in 2012.

Maruti Suzuki – the biggest carmaker – recalled more than 3,700 units of its latest launch – Ciaz sedan, earlier this month, while home-grown automaker – Mahindra & Mahindra – called back 2,300 numbers of Scorpio, XUV 500 and Xylo in November.

One of the biggest recalls drive this year was of Maruti Suzuki, which called back 69,555 numbers of Dzire, Swift and Ritz diesel in September this year.

The government has been looking at introducing mandatory stringent recall norm as part of the proposed Road Transport and Safety Bill. However, as per a recent report, the government may look at easing off this norm, which earlier had a provision of 100 complaints to trigger a recall.
