E-commerce major Flipkart has tweaked its returns policy on most products, saying that all sales will now be considered final, according to a report by The Economic Times

The move is likely to be popular with the vendors as it will help rein in operational costs borne to return and refund for a particular product. However, it is likely to be deemed highly inconvenient for customers who flock to e-commerce portals to make their shopping (and returns, if needed) experience convenient.

According to the report, Flipkart has done away with return and refunds for most of its product categories, including, mobile accessories, office equipment, personal care appliances, computer and camera accessories, and smart wearables. Refunds have been stopped for items such as mobile phones, furniture, and appliances too.

Flipkart said, "If a defect is determined within the 10-day period following delivery/installation, a replacement of the same model will be provided at no additional cost," the new policy says.

However, if there’s no defect confirmed within ten days of delivery, or if a replacement has been provided, the customer will then be directed to the brand’s service centre.

A Flipkart spokesperson said, "Flipkart has a customer-friendly refunds policy that has benefited millions of our customers. Our customers can request for refunds through the self-service option on over 1,150 product categories of the 1,800 available, which constitutes about two-thirds of all categories on Flipkart. In fact, Flipkart processes about 25 thousand refunds on a daily basis, 60 percent of which are instant, where customers don't have to wait to get their money back.

Flipkart’s decision comes at a time when it is buying out ebay’s India operations and is in the fray to acquire Snapdeal. It’s only formidable competitor in the market would then be Amazon India. However, with tight return policies, customers may choose to migrate to Amazon India in the long run. Only time will tell how this move with pan out for Flipkart.
