Fiat Chrysler US to recall 1.7 million vehicles over faulty airbags

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has issued a recall for 1.7 million vehicles in two separate instances, to replace airbags that may deploy unexpectantly.

The first recall has been issued for trucks manufactured between 2012 to 2015, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted on its website.

Chrysler will recall Ram 1500, 2500 and 3000 manufactured between June 20, 2012 and January 26, 2015.

The carmaker has said that the side impact sensor calibrations in trucks manufactured between this period, are overly sensitive, which may lead to the deployment of side airbags unexpectantly and the seat belt pre-tensioners may activate, increasing the chances of a crash.

The second recall is for trucks manufactured between year 2012 and 2014. Fiat will recall the Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks manufactured between January 18, 2011 and October 7, 2014. Only those trucks with the Electronic Vehicle Information Center will be called in to replace the driver airbag that is vulnerable to deploy unexpectantly due to faulty wiring.
