All of 13 years and having gone from school to school, Std IX student Jivan Chaudhari, who is among those evicted from the hostel in Padgha near Panvel, has tough times up ahead. Hailing from Charnewadi in Kanpoli, his home in the hills takes two hours by vehicle and then half an hour of trekking to reach.

His educational journey has been in installments so far. Before taking admission in Sanjay Gandhi High School, which is near the hostel in Padgha, he studied in the school in his home village till Std II. After that, he shifted to another school in another village called Kapoli but had to leave that too in a few years as it offered classes only till Std V. Keen to study further, he decided to stay away from his family and came to the Panvel hostel in 2010 and took admission in the nearby high school.

But now, the eviction has come as another major blow, especially with his exams going on.

"We are continuously doing some or the other work related to the hostel, I don't get sufficient time to study. We don't even get proper sleep at night because of mosquitoes," said the teenager, who underwent the stress of eviction on the day of his first exam paper — Marathi.

"Our school is near Padgha hostel, from there it takes only two minutes to reach. But now, after being shifted to the Khanda Colony hostel, it takes a lot longer as the distance is nine kilometres. Autorickshaws charge more than Rs300 rupees for the stretch, I don't have that much money. So I am planning to walk about two to three kilometres and then take transport."

With the state government yet to pay the Padgha hostel owner the overdue rent, students are worried and stressed about their future and how they will appear for their exams.
