Taking cue from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of developing 100 smart cities in the country, Essel Group chairman Subhash Chandra has committed investments of Rs 7,500 crore to develop five such projects in Madhya Pradesh.

The cities identified are Gwalior, Ujjain, Sagar, Jabalpur and Dewas, wherein the development of integrated smart city projects is expected to generate employment for over 20,000 people.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Chandra said, "I was personally thrilled to hear the announcement of 100 smart cities by the PM because we were also thinking on those lines."

Addressing an elite audience on the concluding day of the 'Invest Madhya Pradesh - Global Investors Summit - 2014' at Indore, Chandra said that Essel Group has already invested Rs 5,000 crore towards developing projects in infra and utility and will evaluate projects worth Rs 50,000 crore of similar nature in the years to come.

Working towards changing the landscape of primary utility services by way of conceptualising, developing and implementing the smart city concept, the projects will be developed in association with the Madhya Pradesh government under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.

Under long-term PPP association spanning over 35 years, the group intends to nurture integrated smarter communities across major cities of the state. This will be done by undertaking projects in power and water distribution services, municipal solid waste management, sewage treatment, drainage and storm water management, city wi-fi and, cable and broadband, city gas distribution and intelligent traffic management system.

Efforts are also on to accelerate operations in other segments to develop state-of-the-art infrastructural solutions that are innovative, sustainable as well as eco-friendly. The company is already managing power distribution franchise for Ujjain and Sagar, and will soon takeover Gwalior distribution franchisee operations. In collaboration with world's leading solid waste management technology company, Hitachi Zosen, the group is setting up a state-of-the-art waste to energy plant in Jabalpur for managing municipal solid waste.

The group's integrated utilities company – Essel Utilities & Distribution Co Ltd – is engaged in transforming ageing public utility infrastructure into modern utility realm to provide world-class infra and utility with global practices in reliability, safety and customer experience.

The company is working towards implementing a single window solution with SIPC (Smart Integrator and Principal Contractor) concept, delivering all-in-one conduit to consumers, thus offering scalable and affordable solutions for a smarter life.

From planning and designing stage to funding and implementation of projects, the company will undertake turnkey projects for creating a smart city habitat.
