After lying low for more than two years after a fire at its hospital in Kolkata took several lives, Emami group is reviving its interest in the healthcare sector by investing more than Rs 1,000 crore in three hospitals.

"We are in the process of investing Rs 1,000 crore in the healthcare sector. Of this we have already put in Rs 300 crore in Bhubaneshwar. Another Rs 650-700 crore would be invested, including one in Rajarhat where we are investing Rs 500 crore while Rs 150 crore would go towards expansion of our Mukundpur unit," Manish Goenka, director Emami Ltd told dna.

The group's healthcare facilities are managed by AMRI Hospitals, where Emami has a minor stake.

The healthcare arm has been set up in a joint venture with Kolkata-based Shrachi Group, owned by the Todi family, whose 32% stake is in the process of being bought over by the Emami group, co-owned by the Agarwal and Goenka family.

The Bhubaneshwar facility, spread over 5 acres, was started two months back with 354 beds, while the AMRI Annexe Building at Dhakuria in Kolkata, where 91 people died in a fire accident in 2011, was reopened two weeks back.

Emami is now planning to set up its biggest hospital at Rajarhat the satellite township near Kolkata.

"'In Rajarhat, we plan to set up a large hospital with 500 beds along with a nursing college. One of the major issues there now is the amalgamation of the two sets of land of 3 acres and 2 acres respectively. Construction of Rajarhat hospital can start early next year also. We are going at a fast pace but it all depends upon when the amalgamation would be completed," Goenka said.

Additionally, Emami is expanding its facility at Mukundapur by adding 120 beds from the existing 150 beds.

Under the AMRI brand, Emami currently has hospitals at Salt Lake and Mukundapur, both near Kolkata, at Dhakuria in south Kolkata and a diagnostic facility at Southern Avenue in the city.

It also has plans to have facilities at all capital cities of eastern India.

The group also has a medicine retail chain, Frank Ross, which is now being aggressively expanded beyond West Bengal with opening up of new stores.

"There are about 100 stores in West Bengal and also some in Ahmedabad, Bangalore and now we would start adding more cities," Goenka said.

The shops are managed by Emami Frank Ross Ltd, the retail arm of the group which also houses bookstore chain Starmark and a gallery, Emami Chisel Art Pvt Ltd.
