Bajaj Auto and Kawasaki will end their eight-year-old alliance in India from April 1, 2017, Bajaj Auto's Probiking President Amit Nanadi said in a statement. The move comes as Bajaj is planning to focus on its KTM brand.

HIGHLIGHTS:

⇒ The alliance will end on April 1, 2017
⇒ Bajaj wants to focus on KTM brand
⇒ Bajaj - Kawasaki alliance will only end for Indian markets; it will remain in place for rest of the world
⇒ Kawasaki's existing and new customers will be provided after sales service through the India Kawasaki Motors network

The Bajaj Auto and Kawasaki alliance was forged in 2009 for the sale and after sales service of Kawasaki motorcycles through Bajaj's Probiking network.

"Kawasaki and Bajaj have mutually arrived at an amicable decision to end their alliance in India from April 1, 2017," the automaker said in a statement.

From April 1, "Kawasaki motorcycles will be sold and after sales service, including that of past customers, will be provided by 'India Kawasaki Motors Pvt Ltd (a 100% subsidiary of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Japan), established in India in July 2019, through its own dealer network.

However, their alliance is only coming to an end for the Indian market. Bajaj said the two companies "will continue to maintain their co-operative relationship across the rest of the world for current and future businesses."

The move comes as Bajaj intends to focus on its KTM range of sportsbikes, it said.

While Bajaj Auto has several KTM bikes on sale in India, the first Bajaj - KTM co-developed bike, the 200 Duke, was launched in 2012. "Now the Duke and RC models are being offered in five SKU's through 300-plus KTM dealerships in India," the automaker said.

Bajaj said, over the last five years, KTM achieved a CAGR of 48% and sales volume in FY17 is estimated at 37,000 units.
