The Department of Telecom has started sending notices to six telecom companies on the basis of the CAG report that alleges that these companies had under-reported revenues of nearly Rs 45,000 crore, Zee Business alert said.

The CAG had found that six telecom companies -- Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, Idea Cellular, Reliance Communication, Aircel, Tata Teleservices -- had all under-reported their revenues in 2006-07 and 2009-10 causing a loss to the exchequer.

On the basis of the CAG report, the Department of Telecom was earlier expected to send tax demand notices to the tune of Rs 12,500 crore to the aforementioned telcos.

However, the DoT has reportedly sent a Rs 100-150 crore demand notice to the companies. It includes interest and penalties too.

While currently the notices have only been sent to one circle, they will be extended to the rest of the circles within two months, Zee Business said.

The CAG report had alleged in its report, that under-reporting of revenues to the tune of Rs 45,000 crore had led to a Rs 12,000-crore loss to the exchequer.
