Demonetization: Banks receive Rs 5.12 lakh crore in deposits in 9 days

The government decommissioned the use of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes with effect from November 8 midnight.

In the post-demonetized economy, banks have received deposits worth nearly Rs 5.12 lakh crore, the Reserve Bank of India said. 

Apart from this, in value terms, from November 10 till November 18, people exchanged Rs 33,006 crore worth of old and now-defunct currency for acceptable tenders, it said. 

'Banks have since reported that such exchange/ deposits effected from November 10, 2016 upto November 18, 2016, amounted to Rs 5,44,571 crore (exchange amounted to Rs 33,006 crore and deposits amounted to Rs 5,11,565 crore). 

In the period, amid a cap on daily and weekly cash withdrawals, the public withdrew Rs 1,03,316 crore from their accounts over the counter or through ATMs.
