Consumer inflation crosses 5%-mark for May

The CSO data showed that general CPI for rural areas stood at 5.52% and urban sectors registered an inflation of 4.41% as against 8,21% and 8.44% for the same month last year. Combined CPI for May 2014 was at 8.33%.

Consumer inflation or Consumer Price index (CPI) for the month of May 2015 crossed 5% and stood at 5.01% as per the data provided by Central Statistics Organisation (CSO). 

The inflation number for the month of April was at 4.87% and has crossed 5%-mark after November 2014 when it stood at 4.38%. 

This is also the first increase in consumer inflation since January this year (see chart).

The CSO data showed that general CPI for rural areas stood at 5.52% and urban sectors registered an inflation of 4.41% as against 8,21% and 8.44% for the same month last year. Combined CPI for May 2014 was at 8.33%. 

Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) for the month of May 2015 was at 4.80% with rural areas registering  4.74% increase and 4.84% for urban centres. 

CFPI for May 2014 stood at 8.89% with rural centres at 9.55% and 7.92% for urban areas.

Inflation in vegetables stood at 4.64% followed by fruits at 3.84% and milk and products at 7.43%. 

Inflation rate in pulses and products continue to sore at 16.62% as against same month of last year, followed by spices, prepared meals, snacks & sweets at 8.82% and 7.89% respectively.
