Union Coal Secretary Anil Swarup on Sunday appreciated the performance of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), even as he said the target is to hit the 250-million tonnes mark in the next five years. MCL, a subsidiary of Coal India, has crossed 100 million tonnes coal production on January 6, 2016.

MCL is performing very well and all efforts should be made to achieve the 2020 target of producing 250 million tonnes, Swarup said while chairing the review meeting at MCL, which contributes one-fourth to the total production of CIL.

The Coal Secretary was at MCL headquarters here on the last leg of his three-day visit to Odisha. Swarup also appreciated the role of MCL in introduction of leveraging technologies in the industry for more transparency and better operational efficiency, an MCL release said.

He also attended the Joint Consultative Committee meeting at MCL and interacted with the representatives of trade unions in the company. During his visit, the Coal Secretary also launched 'Samadhan' web portal - an e-initiative for grievance redressal - in MCL.
