China's April exports fall 1.8%, imports down 10.9%

China's trade surplus in the month was $45.56 billion

China's April exports disappointed analyst expectations, falling 1.8% from a year earlier, while imports fell by 10.9%, customs data showed on Sunday.

That left the country with a trade surplus of $45.56 billion for the month, the General Administration of Customs said.

Analysts polled by Reuters had expected exports to fall by 0.1%, and predicted imports would fall by 5.0%. 

Yuan-denominated exports fell 4.1% in April compared to the same period last year and imports fell 5.7% in the month. The trade balance in yuan terms was 298 billion yuan.
