Budget 2017: 10 things Railways received in its first general budget

Rs 1 lakh crore corpus for railway safety fund over five years, said Jaitley.

With maximum focus on safety, infra development and cleanliness, the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday presented the new format of the Budget which subsumed the rail budget. 

The total capital and developmental expenditure for Railways in 2017-18 has been pegged at Rs 1.31 lakh crore, including Rs 55,000 crore which will be provided by the government.

For 2017-18, the total capital and development expenditure of Railways has been pegged at Rs 1,31,000 crores. This includes Rs 55,000 crores provided by the Government.
 

"Merger of Railways Budget with General Budget brings focus on a multi-modal approach for development of railways, highways and inland water transport," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said.

Jaitley said that the functional autonomy of the Railways will continue.

Railways, roads and rivers are the lifeline of our country. I feel privileged to present the first combined Budget of independent India that includes the Railways also. We are now in a position to synergise the investments in railways, roads, waterways and civil aviation.
 

Stating that a new metro rail policy will be announced, Jaitley said that the move will open up new jobs for our youth.

10 things Jaitley announced to improve Indian Railways 

1) In the wake of frequent fatal accidents, a rail safety fund with corpus of Rs 100,000 crore will be created over a period of five years. This will be called the Rashtriya Rail Sanraksha Kosh. 

2) At least 25 stations expected to be awarded for station redevelopment during 2017-18

3) 500 stations to be made friendly for differently-abled by providing lifts and escalators.

4)  By 2019, all coaches of Indian Railways will be fitted with bio-toilets.

5) Railways will integrate end to end transport solutions for selected commodities through partnership.

6) Unmanned railway level crossings to be eliminated by 2020

7) Railway lines of 3,500 km will be commissioned in 2017-18, as against 2,800 km in 2016-17

8) Railway tariffs to be fixed on the basis of cost, social obligation and competition Railway line of 3,500 km will be commissioned in 2017-18 as against 2,800 km in 2016-17.

9) Expert international assistance will be harnessed to improve safety preparedness and maintenance practices.

10) Steps will be taken to launch dedicated trains for tourism and pilgrimage. ​
