As cash-strapped households with impending marriages wonder how to go about them without Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, Uber has spot a Rs 5,000 crore opportunity.

The taxi-hailing app has tied up with a wedding planning firm,WedMeGood, to provide transportation facility during this wedding season in 12 cities.

The facility is available in New Delhi, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ludhiana, Udaipur, Lucknow and Kolkata.

Ola too is marketing its Ola Rentals, a facility for bulk users, to cash in on the wedding season. This feature of Ola is available at 35 cities.

The domestic wedding market is estimated to be Rs 100,000 crore annually and growing at a fast pace. Around Rs 5,000 crore is annually spent to book hotels, taxis and buses for wedding annually and dominated by road travel agents or tourist bus/cab providers.

Uber and Ola have no presence in this segment.

"Weddings in India are typically an elaborate affair, often spanning month-long planning and week-long celebrations. Weddings also bring in the logistical challenge. We would provide an easy way for hosts to ensure that wedding-related travel within the city is managed through cashless pre-generated promo codes," said Prabhjeet Singh, general manager of Uber (Delhi & NCR).

Therefore, even for wedding shopping to the markets or to arrange transport for guests, the hosts can book a certain number of rides and pass on the promo codes with friends and relatives to provide hassle-free and cashless commute.

According to WedMeGood, the promo code can also be customised by keying in names of bride and groom. The codes will be printed by Uber in three days from the date of purchasing it.

"This code can be an extension to their invitations or give them to their family members to ride for free during the period. This will enable the host to keep a track of their travel expenses without worrying about coordinating pick-ups and drops, parking, waiting charges, etc," said Singh.

Ola neither confirmed or denied their plans for a similar transportation solution during the ongoing wedding season.

A similar facility, Uber Weddings, is available in the US cities of Washington DC, San Francisco, New York, Boston and Los Angeles.
