Reliance Industries Ltd's subsidiary arm Reliance Jio, in the company filings to BSE stated that its varied free services will end on March 31, 2017.

During the October-December quarter, Jio had announced the launch of ‘Jio Happy New Year Offer (“JNO”)’ effective from 4th December 2016. Under JNO, all subscribers have been entitled to certain special benefits, which comprise of Jio’s Data, Voice, Video and its applications free up to 31st March 2017. The company had stated that only those who will subscribe on or before March 3, 2017 will be able to avail the aforementioned benefits.

In its filing to the BSE, the company reported that it crossed 50 million subscribers in the first 83 days since the service had been launched. Getting around 6 lakh subscribers per day, the company had 72.4 million subscribers within four months from the commencement of services.

The company, however, complained of continued interconnection congestion issues with other operators on account of inadequate provision of points of interconnection (POI) capacities. Aiming at rivals like Airtel and Vodafone, the company stated, "The POI capacity provided by these operators is still way below requirement and is falling short of the customer addition pace of Jio, resulting in quality of service issues for Indian customers." It further added that because of this, call failure rates continue to be of the order of 175 calls failing out of every 1,000 calls from Jio to Airtel network when the Quality of Service regulations mandate that no more than 5 calls out of every 1,000 calls can fail.

In response to Jio’s free services, Airtel, India’s largest carrier, and other operators have slashed tariffs by as much as 66%, and have increased data allowances to retain customers. Airtel has accused the nation’s telecom regulator of turning a blind eye to Jio’s free service offer. In an affidavit filed at the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal, Airtel said Jio’s free services were against the interests of the industry and will wipe out competition.

In the third quarter, Jio had announced a scheme for iPhone users on Jio's network where they would receive one year of complimentary Jio Digital Services as well as convenient and personalised Jio SIM activation experience at doorstep.

In an exchange filing on Saturday the company had announced that it would raise Rs 30,000 crore ($4.4 billion) from a rights offer and would use the proceeds to enhance its network capacity
