Leading Indian tyre manufacturer, Apollo Tyres, struck it big recently with innovation that goes beyond the realm of tyres. The company’s R&D team along with the boffins from the Apollo Vredestein centre in Enschede in the Netherlands has developed a brand-new variable-geometry front spoiler meant to do duty in the latest iteration of the Porsche 911 turbo and turbo S. Called the “Air Master by Vredestein”, this spoiler can actively transform its shape using some clever pneumatics to suit immediate driving requirements and is an integrated part of the Porsche Active Aerodynamics system.

When the 911 turbo is being driven at slow speeds, the spoiler can retract behind the front bumper to maximise ground clearance for passing over speed breakers and other urban obstacles. As the turbo picks up speed, the spoiler extends out from the sides to optimise air flow around the wheels to help the car cleave through the air easier, which also reduces fuel consumption in the process.
When set to the performance position, the complete length of the spoiler extends in order to provide extra downforce at the front, which in conjunction to the turbo’s rear wing provides a dramatic increase in grip.
