Here's what you need to know about Telangana's start-up ecosystem, T-hub

Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus, Ratan Tata along with the governor of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governor ESL Narasimhan will be inaugurating Telangana's much-awaited T-hub, a state-of-the-art start-up ecosystem. 

The government of Telangana and select private companies have come up with a start-up ecosystem in the new state, to aid and incubate new entrepreneurs.

This private/public partnership will seek to attract entrepreneurs, investors and advisors from across the country to come together in one place.

T-hub will be a complete eco-system that will offer 360 degree support for budding entrepreneurs. It is being touted as India’s largest innovation and technology incubation centre.

Here are some key things you need to know about the T-hub

-- The T-hub is a single, six-storeyed building spread across 60,000 feet, which will play host to entrepreneurs, investors, venture capitalists, advisors and mentors. It aims to offer seed funding, office space, mentorship and opportunities to network all under one roof.

-- The T-Hub has also partnered with premier educational institutions like Indian Institute of Technology - Hyderabad, Indian School of Business, NALSAR university.

-- The T-hub is a state-of-the-art facility that aims to house nearly 1,000 start-ups by 2020. 

-- For funding, there are many large venture capital firms like Kalaari Capital, Peepul and Sequoia already on board with T-Hub. The website lists an A-Z directory of investors already on board.

-- According to a report, T-hub already has about 130 start-ups on board, even before its launch. Over 500 start-ups have shown interest in being a part of T-hub.

-- It is also expected to provide annual employment for at least 3,000 people by 2017.

Phases of T-Hub

In Phase 1, T-Hub building has been built at a cost of Rs 35 crore, and is spread over 60,000 sq feet. This building will be used for the next three years and will house about 800 start-ups.

In Phase 2, which will be launched in 2017, the T-hub will get its own campus spread over 3,00,000 sq ft. The Telangana government is about to commission the second phase of the project with an investment of Rs 150 crore. The campus will come up at Raidurgam near Hitec city. 

About the Investors and Mentors

According to reports, Telangana IT Minister K. Tarakarama, during a recent visit to US had said that venture capitalists in Silicon Valley who are connected to Hyderabad, have shown interest in the innovation fund. Over 30 technology companies are keen to be a part of T-Hub.

The minister has said that Tata Capital has showed interest in participating in the fund and the deal will be closed shortly.

T-Hub has 60 individuals from top academic institutions to play the mentor's role.

Along with them, Infosys co-founder N.R. Narayan Murthy will also be a mentor, and and one of the principal advisors at the hub, said the report.

Rao said that he has requested biggies like Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Adobe Systems CEO Shantanu Narayen, Biocon's chairman and managing director Kiran Mazumdar Shaw to come forward as mentors and address the young entrepreneurs.
