Low-cost airline AirAsia has announced that all the Asean Olympic gold medal winners will be eligible for lifetime free flights with the airline.

AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes shared the announcement on Thursday on Instagram.

"I admire the performance of athletes like Sukanya Srisurat and Sopita Tanasan from Thailand, Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir from Indonesia, and also Joseph Schooling and Hoang Xuan Vinh who won the first golds for Singapore and Vietnam,” Fernandes said in a statement.

This also means though, that there will be no free flights from AirAsia for Indian athletes, who only won a silver and a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics this year.

P V Sindhu won the silver in badminton, thereby becoming India's first woman to win a Olympics silver medal. The bronze was brought home by Sakshi Malik in women's wrestling.

While Indian athletes won't be eligible for free flights with AirAsia, the airline said that it will be offering free flights for five years to silver medalists, and for three years for bronze medalists.

This means, silver medalist P V Sindhu will be able to fly AirAsia for free for five years, and wrestler Sakshi Malik will be able to fly by the airline for free for two years.

These free tickets can be availed for any destination that AirAsia flies to within the AirAsia network, and AirAsia X in Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Africa, The Jakarta Post said.

Both Sindhu and Malik were given the Khel Ratna Award by President Pranab Mukherjee with many others conferred to other sportspersons.

The Telangana government announced a cash reward of Rs 1 crore for the badminton player. She also received a BMW from V C Chamundeshwarnath, President of the Hyderabad District Badminton Association, which was handed over to her by cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.

The Badminton Association of India also announced a reward of Rs 50 lakh for Sindhu and Rs 10 lakh for Gopichand, her coach. Maharashtra government announced a Rs 50 lakh award for her, and a Vijayawada jewellery showroom chain is expected to sign her up as the brand ambassador.

Sakshi Malik was awarded Rs 2.5 crore for winning a bronze medal, from the Haryana government. She is also due to receive Rs 20 lakh earmarked for a bronze Olympic medalist set aside by the Sports Ministry's Special Awards Scheme, to name a few.
