Apex transporters body AIMTC has demanded rollback of hike in fuel prices, saying it has affected the transport sector and would lead to another round of inflation.

"The first day of June 2016 has come as double whammy to the transport sector and the common man of India."

"First, 0.5% service tax is enhanced from June 1, 2016, then there is steep hike in fuel prices and now LPG. The turn of events...have become utterly disappointing," AIMTC said in a statement, urging the government to withdraw the hikes.

All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) is an umbrella body of transporters and claims to represent 93 lakh truckers and about 50 lakh bus and tour operators.

It said the hiking petrol price by Rs 2.58 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.26 a litre is steep and has impacted people and trade.

Petrol price has been hiked by a steep Rs 4.47 a litre and diesel by Rs 6.46 per litre in the last five weeks, taking retail rates to their highest level in one year.
