In a year when motorcycles have not performed too well, the Chennai-based two-wheeler company has surpassed the industry growth and expanded its market share. J S Srinivasan, vice president – sales and services, tells Praveena Sharma that the third largest bikes and scooters company will get into super-premium bike segment once it hits 30,000 units per month in the premium bike segment.

What is your strategy for growth going to be?
During the last two years, the industry growth has been quite slow. Particularly this year, the industry will be more or less flat. However, our growth in the last two years has been quite good. This fiscal also, we will be hitting 10% growth against the industry growth of 1%. This is good growth, particularly our scooters have grown very well. In motorcycle segment, Apache 200 has logged a good growth and Velocity has made a comeback. With these two, we are at 7% market share against last year's 6%. This year, with Victor coming in and Apache 200, we expect to grow at 2-3% next year in the motorcycle segment and that's close to 10% market share. Overall, our two-wheeler sales have gone up from 1.72 lakh units to 1.88 lakh. Next year, we are looking at going to close to 2.25 lakh, which will give us an 18% market share.

What has driven the growth?
Last year, the growth drivers were Jupiter and Apache 200. This year, there is still a headroom for Jupiter to grow. So, it will be a growth driver in the coming year too. Victor, which we are launching in the executive segment now, is a big statement. There also, we are expecting a good growth in the coming year.

Are you looking at electric or hybrid models?
Not in this year. We are working on it. Hybrid models are being worked on by every company.

How bullish are you on premium bike and superbike segment?
We are not in the super premium segment but we are there in the premium segment. Apache 200 has been doing well in the last two years. We were doing 11-12,000 per month in the segment two years back. We have now reached 24,000 per month. So, that is a good jump that we have done. We would like to further up this and move up our volume. That is why we have launched this Apache 200 now, which we feel is going to help us reach 30,000 numbers per month in domestic market. Then, we will be getting into super premium segment.
