In an unprecedented move, Ultimate Players Association of India (UPAI) will be sending the first ever Indian women’s team to Ultimate Frisbee World Championship scheduled for June 2016 in London. “The sport has been in India for about 8 years. It has taken all this time for the Ultimate community to put together this team,” says Rajani Shanker, manager of the team.

20 women from all over the country have been selected to be on this team. Rajani, an Ultimate Frisbee player herself, says, “They have had to cross various barriers to be here. These were pertaining to the fact that they are women, along with societal, family, personal, professional barriers. Now the last barrier they are facing is financial.” Thus, they have started a crowdfunding campaign on the crowdfunding site, Ketto. They need these funds to be able to afford to go to London.

Ultimate Frisbee is one of the fastest growing sports in the world today. It is played in over 40 countries. India, itself has 2000 players with the sport being played in over 13 cities.
