The Shamiana film club will have screenings on the first Saturday of every month, starting today. Aniruddha Guha reports
Shamiana, the short film club started in April 2007, is back with its latest bouquet of short films. Screenings will be held on the first Saturday of every month.
The line up for today includes films as varied as the British comedy Blood and Chips to the realistic portrayal of police encounters in the Hindi short, It's My Turn. "The idea is to not stick to a particular theme and give viewers a complete panorama of shorts from all over the world," says Cyrus Dastur, convener of Shamiana.
An interesting film is the American short, George Lucas In Love, directed by Joe Nussbaum, maker of features like Sleepover and Sydney White. It is about the legendary filmmaker, a college student suffering from writer's block in the film. He meets people who influence characters like Obi Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Chewbacca and Jabba and eventually lead to the creation of the cult Star Wars trilogy. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 1999 and has won accolades and awards since.
Another film, The Final Stroke, is an abstract silent short about a genius painter who creates a masterpiece, his last. However, the artist'sinternal conflict with art persists. Adeya Rajan, the director, is thrilled about the film being screened at Shamiana. "An event like thisallows me to interact with audiences immediately after the film is screened and get instant feedback," he says.
The Shamiana film club, earlier known as the Mocha film club, started in 2003 and has showcased some of the finest Indian short films like Birju and Little Terrorist, both nominated at the Oscars, In The Pink, a brilliant documentary on flamingoes that was bought by Discovery Channel and international gems like the Oscar-winning Mexican short Quero Ser and the German cult film Countdown.
