Food review: Souk at the Taj Mahal Palace

Souk at the Taj Mahal Palace
Apollo Bunder, Colaba

Tthe rooftop restaurant, Souk at the Taj Mahal Palace, Colaba offers you a bird’s-eye view of the city with the scenic backdrop of the Arabian Sea and the Gateway of India. The décor is Spartan with the tables and chairs being utilitarian. The dim lights add to the ambience as it exudes warmth.

The extensive menu has dishes that range from Lebanese to Turkish to Athenian to Casablanca to Morocco. You can choose from a platter of shawarmas, kebabs, lamb chops, prawns or a chicken stew. They also offer a variety of delicacies starting with the famous Mezzes, soups, grills and an array of exclusive selection of breads. We started with the Felafel Sandwich which was a combination of felafel served with lettuce, onion and tomato salad in pita bread. Along with another specialty from Athens called the Kolokithi — crispy zucchini, yellow squash and eggplant chips served with a lip-smacking garlic yoghurt dip. We then moved on to the entrees which boasted of delicacies from countries like Morocco, Turkey, Egypt, Greece and a few more. We finally zeroed in on Khudra Mushakal — Brocolli, seallion, mushroom and haricot beans tossed in cumin turmeric sauce served with rice. Next up was the chef recommended — B’ Stillas, which is virtually the national dish of Morocco. It consisted of highly flavoured mixtures encased in crispy and flaky golden warkha pastry served with salad.  We settled for the B’Stilla with green beans, spinach and roasted aubergines with cream.

We ended the lavish lunch with yet another specialty of the chef — the crunchy almond and date ice-cream. It was something that left us wanting for more. This is definitely one of the restaurants that you would see me coming back to.
