There’s a new art show in town, one that combines two of life’s greatest and possibly guiltiest pleasures: art and wine.
It features 11 artists from different parts of India, each with a different perspective on the theme of art and wine.
Dipender Nath Pal, one of the artists, believes that wine is only enjoyed by the upper strata of society. One of his paintings at the exhibition demonstrates a young couple from that stratum drinking wine. Dipender says, “The painting illustrates the lifestyle of the couple and features multiple wine glasses. The different flavours of wine in the glasses reveal the different kinds of flavours within the relationship. It establishes that the outer surface is not final and that there is more once you look inside. “
Another artist, Tirthankar Biswas, depicts a man drinking heavily in a painting aptly titled On the Rampage. The painting evokes a feeling of imbalance, destruction and danger. Tirthankar says,
“I painted the work spontaneously without a visual of the theme. What took shape was a drunken man wanting to cause a
disturbance.”
Amit Shrivastava who also created paintings for the show says, “Keeping a glass of wine as an inspiration I have painted
vintage after vintage with passion, dedication to quality and respect for traditions. I paint the people who relate from our moderate culture’s belief that wine is as strong a status symbol as a painting is.”
Amit further explains with an example. “A poet once said ‘The whole universe is in a glass of wine’. It is true that if we look at a glass of wine closely enough, we see the entire universe and that’s the whole idea of my paintings,” he ends.
