Valentine’s Day was essentially meant to be a day to be celebrated with your loved ones, until recently the definition of loves ones became restricted to just your partner. Couples go all out to profess their love for each other on this special day, but is the concept of Valentine’s Day dying a slow death?

For 21-year-old Sreeja Patnaik, Valentine’s Day never made a difference. “I am in a relationship for the past three years but I have never really understood the concept of celebrating love on one special day. It’s silly to buy gifts for each other on February 14 each year. It is almost like dismissing your love on the rest of the days in a year. Plus it sounds so stupid to dress up in red or pink and watch a mushy movie,” she says.

Well, this shift in attitude seems to be happening a lot of late with the younger generation explains psychologist, Priyanka Doshi Fernandes. “I don’t think the concept of celebrating Valentine’s Day is as exciting as it was before. Increasingly, we see youngsters celebrating the day with people they are close to, like family or friends. The attitude that this day is only to be celebrated with your partner or girlfriend is slowly changing and that, I believe, is for the good. Plus this will also help singles not feel bad about not having that special someone in their lives to celebrate the day with.”

24-year-old Pratik Dedhia, who would celebrate Valentine’s Day a couple of years back, is now completely anti-Valentine. Looking back, he says that the entire concept was pretty foolish so he stopped doing the yearly ritual. “Initially, my girlfriend was pretty pissed because she was of the opinion that we should be celebrating the day but later she understood where I came from. Now, we both look at couples wearing red, holding hands and laugh out loud. I guess it is fine to celebrate Valentine’s Day, I have nothing against it, but its more fun being with your family and friends.”
