Such is the power of social networking and microblogging sites that it can connect you to friends across the world as well as earn you new friends, but did you know the innocuous updates have been fodder for 80% of marriages crumbling across the globe?

A survey released by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers last year, pointed out that 81 per cent of divorce lawyers had lifted off information like status messages, posts on a friend’s walls, photos, comments or even tweets from Facebook and Twitter in the previous five years as grounds for divorce.

This doesn’t limit to the US itself. “This medium has become extremely handy,” asserts Mumbai-based celebrity lawyer Vibhav Krishna. “I have used information and photographs from Facebook to defend my clients. I have been at the receiving end too.”

Paresh Desai, a divorce lawyer seconds that. “Particularly in cases where the husband or the wife alleges their partner guilty of misbehaviour, there is no eye-witness except for the couple alone,” he explains.

The presence of social networking sites has made  hiring a detective to spy on a spouse redundant. “I once used a man’s Facebook status as strong evidence against him. Even though he was married, his status on facebook read ‘single’. In the process of getting a divorce itself, he changed it to ‘separated’ — which again was inappropriate,” adds Desai.

Rishi Bhutia, a criminal lawyer, states, “The best thing about Facebook is that it is a public domain, hence lifting information doesn’t count as hacking. You have only yourself to blame for your debacle!”

Clearly, these sites are goldmines of information and can also unleash immense havoc in your marriage.  So watch what you put up online, as you never know who’s scooping it all up for future trouble.
