Detachment Commander, Indian Navy, V K Janardhanan and hospitality and travel consultant, A Krishnaswamy, debate over the responsibilities of the youth.
A Krishnaswamy: You’ve been in the navy for the last 25 years, tell us what made you join the force?
V K Janardhanan: I didn’t want to take up a random profession. Patriotism is the only reason why I joined the Indian Navy. Though my family is into building townships, I decided to step away. Honestly, I can’t believe I have been part of the force for the last three decades now. Though, I’ve had several experiences... the hardships we faced during the Kargil war remains unforgettable.
K: Tell us about the war.
J: The navy didn’t have much role in the war apart from being prepared for action in case it became a bigger conflict. Yet, it was an unforgettable experience, it showcased the selflessness of the armed forces — ready to take on risks. Salute to them!
K: The city saw its first Indian Navy Ball. Was it as exciting as we’ve heard it is in other cities?
J: Our headquarters in Mumbai wanted to organise the Navy Ball in Bangalore in order to connect with the crowd, especially since we are planning to set up a huge fleet at Karwar, in Karnataka. Also, the Navy Ball is very different from other pageants. It was great this year, and I am sure it will only get bigger with each year. Tell me, what’s it like to be part of the travel industry?
K: Oh, I just love travelling. I started my career in the hotel industry, but later decided to shift to travel! I was not satisfied with the way the travel agencies worked and found them to be completely disorganised. That’s when I decided to get into the business. Is there any message that you would like to give to the youth?
J: I want today’s youth to come forward and be a part of the force. Several of them work for a couple of years and just leave. I want the patriotism in them to continue, and I want them to serve our country. They are the future of tomorrow, and it is they who must set an example for the generations to come, by being a part of it.
