It first started out as the Lakme India Fashion Week in the year 2000 in Delhi and was jointly organised with FDCI. Since then a lot has changed in the industry and with Lakme and FDCI parting ways, there are now two fashion weeks every season — one in Delhi and one in Mumbai.

In order to celebrate a successful 10 years, Lakme and IMG are having a special show called ‘Then, Now and Forever’ on the first day of LFW in Mumbai, on September 18.

This special show will journey from from the past, cruising through current trends and culminate in a fashion statement that is predicted to be timeless and is hence, ‘forever’. Almost twenty designers — who don’t all necessarily show at LFW any more — will participate (see top).

“Given that this year marks our tenth year in the industry, we knew all along that we wanted a special show to mark the milestone. We just called these designers who have shown with us over the years at our finales and they were only too happy to be a part of the celebrations,” says Anil Chopra, Lakme advisor.

Each designer will walk through the ‘Then’ aesthetic in an audio visual, introducing their grand finale collection of a past season. The journey continues with two looks depicting the designer’s evolution from ‘Then’ to ‘Now’. Finally, the designer will present thevision of what they perceive as eternal and classic with a ‘Forever’ girl.

Designer Varun Bahl — who is one of the participants — recounts his LFW finale experience. “I made my debut at the fashion week in 2004 and the very next year I was showing at the finale alongside Monisha Jaising. I remember we were given ‘Pepper-Mint’ as the theme.

Monisha did a collection themed on ‘Pepper’ while I did one that drew from the ‘Mint’ theme. My clothes at this special show will be an extension of that line, only this will be a contemporary and classier version. That’s all I am going to say.”

Monisha Jaising agrees that the show will make for one interesting nostalgic experience. “I have shown at two finales until now — apart from one with Varun, I did one with Suneet Varma and Rajesh Pratap Singh which was themed ‘electric’. I am showing three creations that will represent my interpretation of that theme for today and the future,” she enthuses.
