Tarun Tahiliani has always stayed away from designing for Bollywood. But when it comes to Shilpa Shetty, he makes an exception, the most recent example of this being the three garments he created for the actor’s wedding and reception.
Now, the designer has gone a step ahead and created one replica each of the three outfits — the red wedding saree, the reception dress and the sangeet lehenga — for the general public.
Tarun seems to have sniffed a business idea out of crafting wedding dresses for celebrities and then replicating them for the public. Though he doesn’t deny this, he says it would be a ‘pointless effort’ if the celebrity is not as ‘path-breaking and iconic as Shilpa’.
“There are countless women who want to have a wedding like hers (Shilpa’s). So I thought it was a good idea to make wedding dresses just like hers,” says Tarun. The cumulative price of all the three dresses is Rs60 lakh. The design has been patented by Tarun to prevent it from being copied.
“It was but natural that her wedding look would create waves. So we have made a near perfect dress. I don’t know if I can repeat that again. But my decision to put in so much effort was because Shilpa is a style icon. There are women who want to look like her, have her body, complexion and aesthetic sense. Shilpa has influenced style in today’s generation,” he ends.
