Talent at the terminal

Finally, the chaos at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has died down as its renovation nears completion. Designed by Alfaz Miller,  the walls of the airport feature works by contemporary Indian artists.

DNA managed to gain exclusive permission to shoot some of the 30 artworks inside the airport which include names like Anjolie Ela Menon, Baiju Parthan, Jaideep Mehrotra, Manu Parekh, Jaideep Mehrotra and Arzan Khambatta.

One of the most attractive installations is by Anant Joshi which is features flags of many countries and small objects that look like colourful wooden toys. A representative of  the airport says, “This work originally didn’t have the map of South Africa and one of our partners, a South African country insisted that we include the map, and we did.”

Another interesting installation by Riyas Komu features pictures of sportsmen in the background, while in the foreground a net is tied across two wooden sculptures. The representative says, “For days together we placed a few footballs at the installation, but they kept disappearing. These weren’t given by the artist, but we thought that it would be nice to add footballs here and so we did. After they were continuously stolen, we stopped putting them as part of the installation.”
