Do people who are optimists and who tend to look at the sunny side of things experience more personal happiness on a day-to-day basis than pessimistic and nihilistic people who are convinced that they are connected to “reality”?

Fashion designer Anita Dongre certainly believes so: “Every human being should acquire this ability because with it your life takes a different path, you can change your karma.”

Television star Shweta Kawatra concurs, “Hope is a key ingredient in happiness. While it is easier for human beings to be negative and nihilistic and unhappy, one should never give up on hope even if it requires much more effort to be hopeful. Yet the rewards of positivity are worth it and can uplift one’s life, as against hopelessness which has the finality of careering downhill. “

Says Shweta, “We live in a stressful world with multiple demands of career, commuting, relationships, finance and health concerns. One of the most effective ways to stay positive is to reconnect with oneself each day. One could do this through a spiritual practice, through writing one’s thoughts down, through taking a walk alone, it varies."

“The mark of a positive personality is when they can remain hopeful even in an adverse situation,” she adds. “As a Buddhist and spiritual practitioner I’m a great believer in Dr Daisaku Ikeda’s words: ‘When your determination changes, everything else will begin to move in the direction you desire. The moment you resolve to be victorious, every nerve and fibre in your being will orient itself toward your success.

On the other hand, if you think, 'This is never going to work out’, then at that instant every cell in your being will be deflated and give up the fight.”

Artist Jitish Kallat meanwhile has his own take on the subject. He believes that living in the moment is the key to achieving positivity and hopefulness.

As he says, “I think if one can fully invest oneself in the present — whether in the midst of artistic creativity or a personal crisis — with a dispassionate distance and healthy fascination about the unfolding future, one can lead an optimal life. To put it another way, one is then fully absorbed in the intriguing intricacies of the moment that is anyway full of magic rather than triumphantly celebrating or hopelessly sulking the past.”
