Spelling out his success mantra, Suhas Mantri, chairman of Mantri Constructions and author of The Comeback: A story of Bankruptcy & Survival, says, “Fight the odds and make a comeback.  When the going gets tough, instead of quitting and losing hope, one must strive to regain lost glory.”

The Comeback has won the best business book of the year award given out by the Indian Economic Development and Research Association, Delhi in May 2010 and traces the story of an entrepreneur on the brink of bankruptcy.

Mantri, an engineer, started his real estate business in 1986. The now successful developer has seen his share of lows in business. Some time ago, Mantri himself was on the verge of bankruptcy, but managed to bounce back. During that time, he noticed that there weren’t too many books on the subject, especially those applicable to the Indian context. That’s when he decided to write the book to offer hope to those embroiled in a similar situation. The book has two sections. The first part, though a work of fiction, “is largely inspired by my own-life-story,” says Mantri. It traces the journey of the protagonist, Harsh Mehta, a real estate developer who hits a downward spiral and is confronted with a choice to either file for insolvency or fight back. “With his reputation at stake, the protagonist embarks on an arduous struggle to not only restore his business, but also salvage his honour,” says the author.  In the second part, Mantri enumerates a seven-step pyramid process detailing ways to help bail out a business in trouble.

“With this book, I wanted to share my experience with budding-entrepreneurs,” says the first-time author, adding, “I hope it will motivate and inspire others to keep at their goal, during difficult times.”

In today’s globalised world, which ushers in quick changes and throws up new challenges every day, age-old business practices can’t propel one to success. There is a need to re-examine and evolve with time and this book, says Mantri, “would be the Bible for all businessmen, as it provides insights into the ever-changing world of business.

For Mantri, being a real estate developer is far easier than being a writer. “Writing is a tough job,” he quips as he talks about his experience. Mantri believes “Winners never quit and quitters never win,” and he owes all his success to this one statement.
