Resolutions are passe, photographs too. At least that is what youngsters in the city feel as they look forward to making 2010 as memorable as last year. Instead, they prefer an insignia that serves as a constant reminder.

For Soumya, tattoos are far more effective than New Year resolutions: “A new year is a time for resolutions and reflection. A tattoo can help remind a person of something he or she wants for a lifetime. So your reflections will remain with you not just for a day in the coming year, but beyond.”

“The previous year was really special for me and I want to carry the good memories from that year for the rest of my life. When you are in college you cannot flaunt your tattoos. A tattoo has become a style statement these days. As I have started working now, I would like to shed a few inhibitions too,” says Aditya Singh, a software professional.

The festive season, from Xmas to New Year, also saw a huge demand for religious tattoos, observe tattoo artists.”There is a wide demand for religious tattoos like the Cross during the festive season. During Diwali, many people opt for tattoos of Hindu gods like Hanuman and Shiva. We have already done 60 tattoos in the last few days,” says Pradeep Menon of Dark Arts, The Tattoo Studio.

According to the artists, the clientele fall within the ages of 18-23. While butterflies, flowers, fairies and stars are popular among women, the men opt for portraits, tribals and Celtic designs.

“I always wanted to get the tattoo of a fairy on my ankle. Our entire group is planning to do it soon. It is definitely a nice way to mark a year in my life. We have come up with a few unique designs also,” says Nikitha P, a student.

Many youngsters like Archa R, a software professional, seconds Menon’s view. “Religious tattoos are definitely popular this season. A tattoo of your favourite god gives you a sense of protection. It is a symbolic representation of your faith. Celtic designs add glam to your entire look,” she notes.

The demand for tattoos peaked around New Year’s which also had many parlours working extra hours. “Many young girls and boys wanted to show off their tattoos to their friends at parties. We had many more customers this season. Some of the popular designs include religious signs, tribal designs, Celtic designs, portraits, butterflies, flowers, stars and fairies,” says S Viswanathan, a tattoo artist from US UK Tattooing.

“Youngsters wanted personalised tattoos for the special season. Everybody comes up with their own special designs. We give a form to their idea, and were armed to meet the special demand,” says Dominic Savio from Ink Mutation near New BEL road.
