India's independent music culture — ie, everything that isn't Bollywood — has undergone a seemingly seismic change in the last two years.

In what promises to be a unique initiative, the NH7 Weekender music festival is being organised in Pune between Friday, December 10 and Sunday, December 12. The music festival's lineup is impressive, including Indian Ocean, Zero, Parikrama,

The Magic Numbers, Pentagram and the Asian Dub Foundation, among many others. The NH7 Weekender is all about the festival experience.

They’re bringing in crazy knick knacks at the festival marketplace, tattoo artists, festival merchandise, an artist village, chill out areas, a handpicked selection of local specials. They have even arranged a play zone for Baby Weekenders at their first music festival.

Spread over multiple stages with dedicated art, food and entertainment spaces, the festival promises to be a fun-filled musical experience.

Tickets are now being sold online at www.nh7.in/weekender.

I-Rock, the country's longest running rock music festival is being held on Sunday, December 5. The event will feature Mumbai bands like Indus Creed, Bhayanak Maut, Scribe and Demonic Resurrection. The event will be held at Chitrakoot Grounds, behind Fun Republic, Andheri (W).

Though the recent events — the SoundBound conference, attended by top international music journalists and eager fans, and the arrival of artists like Mumford and Sons and Canadian indie darlings Tegan and Sara — seem like bolts of lightning, this is not the case. The infrastructure is slowly coming into place, as the music gets better and the fans better informed.

The Future Music Conference is being held at Blue Frog, on Friday and Saturday this week. The conference aims to bring together DJs, artists and independent music producers in India for two days of workshops, discussions, networking and insight into the future of music. As in the recently-concluded SoundBound conference, much of the focus will be on the successful marketing of music and talent.

The USP of festivals such as this is their free-for-all policy — anyone with an interest in the industry is welcome to attend, and learn about the intricacies of the business from professionals. In one of the more promising sounding workshops to be held, Arjun Vagale of Jalebee Cartel will hold forth on the future of digital DJing. To know more, call Blue Frog on 4033 2300.

Bombay Electrik Project's Kenneth Lobo will be heading the Red Bull Music Academy workshop at 4pm on Saturday, December 11 at China House. The workshop will feature Henrik Schwarz from Germany, a veteran of the German house DJing scene, as well as electronica act B.L.O.T from Delhi. The workshop will be followed by a gig at 9pm.
