The college is a stepping stone to the outside world and also a place where students sign up for their style quotient. In the midst of travelling to their college, attending lectures and hanging out with friends, students brighten up their closet with some funky attires. And while most who thought dress codes would be a fashion dud, are in for a surprise, as these too have witnessed style reinventions of sorts. As Rishika Desai, a student of Mount Carmel College, says, “I was very upset when I learned of the dress code. But it didn’t take long to realise that one can reinvent their style with various improvisations, which is an exciting process! Accessories like bangles, beads, bands, black silver jewellery can transform one to a total diva.”

While simple additions make a world of a difference, a variety of fashion statements is what makes a campus colourful as students dress up according to their personalities and style sensibilities. Vidya Gopinathan, a student at Christ University, points out, “From polka dots, long tops, tights — there is a huge list to choose from! Also, scarves are the latest elements of fashion in our campus that add a style statement.” In footwear, she adds that besides the usual rockstars and ballerinas, colourful chappals are a fashion staple. Ambika Desai, of Jyothi Nivas College, explains that harem pants are a popular pick amongst her fellow students. “Long kurtas, tops paired with leggings are also a huge hit,” she adds. The Tibetian Plaza, Ambika offers is the preferred shopping destination for many from her college as it offers colourful, vibrant garments. “Everyone loves putting on beautiful coloured kurtas, accessories, shoes and eyeliners too!” she exclaims enthusiastically.

And in this day and age of fashion, can the boys be left far behind? Akash, a technology student points out that hairstyle is what forms the main style quotient for the boys. “From rebonding and straightening hair, to hair bands and Mohawks, and sometimes sporting the completely shaved-head look, we have our means of making a style statement, he says, adding that though eye brow and lip piercing are hip, they are out of bounds for most students in a host of city colleges. Shoes too are an important accessory, say the guys. Engineering student Joel Baptist adds that from formal black leather, to sporty, Indian jute footwear and funky bathroom slippers, anything goes, till it does not make a fashion faux pas.
