City pubs are leaving no stone unturned in their attempt to try and lure in as many people as possible with unique music and other programmes. And it is not just live gigs or performances any more. The choices have gone bizarre beyond belief. Says Mukul Shah, a Delhi based entrepreneur who is currently keen on opening a lounge bar in Mumbai, “You need to give people a reason to pick your restaurant or club over any other. Things like theme parties, dance nights or live gigs are not new any more, and have been taken up by most well known pubs. Hence when you showcase something totally bizarre and unusual, it works. For instance, I remember I went to Hard Rock for a beatboxing performance, which was very new at that time. Most of the people there did not know about it at all, but their curiosity pulled them to the venue.”

While the old acts are still alive and have their own takers, the more experimental acts invite a lot of young crowd. Risa Dun, a second year college student agrees. “If even one person in the group gets to know of something new or exciting happening in the city, we all head for it,” she says. “However going for a karaoke night once every month is like a ritual in our group.”

Mocha Mojo, a cafe in Bandra, has organised a few board game nights in the past where people can come and sip their coffee, while simultaneously indulging in the game.

Recently, Busaba (a restaurant in Lower Parel) has come up with a unique concept of mix martial arts (a combat sport that includes various fighting techniques and allows fighters of different backgrounds to compete), a brainchild of Somesh Kamra, Managing Director of Mix Martial Arts (MMA), India. So while you are feasting on your food, you can enjoy watching the ferocious clash of the fighters. Says Somesh “MMA is an established sport in US and Singapore and since I have trained in it, I was keen on bringing it to India.”

After a few screenings of the sport, Somesh has been receiving offers and invites from many lounges who want to adopt it too. “The response has been great. I have even got calls from people who offer to be sponsors.” The restaurant also has some interactive games like panja fights. India is an exciting market when it comes to entertainment, believes Somesh. And he wishes to introduce MMA workshops too, “only if the lounge allows me to be more experimental.”
