Mumbai: The Indian music fraternity is all set to put up the first public tribute to the late Ustad Ali Akbar Khan in the city. Music maestros from all over the country along with young promising artists will be getting together to pay their respects to the late musician through a fifteen and a half hour-long music performance that is expected to be attended by celebrities and the public alike.
A spokesperson from the organiser's committee confirms, "There was a condolence meeting in the city, but a few leading music personalities from the city decided it was best to pay a tribute to the ustad by doing what he liked to do best -- make music."
The legendary Sarod player, Padmavibhushan Ustad Ali Akbar Khan passed away on June 18 at his home in San Anselmo, California. While the date of the event has been fixed on July 11, the organsiers are glad that they managed to acquire a venue at such a short notice.
A representative of the organising committee on conditions of anonymity says, "It was really fortunate that Shanmukhanand Sabha Auditorium had a date open on July 11 and we grabbed the opportunity with both hands. We contacted several music maestros from all over the country and they quickly relented."
Unlike popular belief that classical music entertains a niche audience, the organisers are expecting a large number of young audience too, credited to the popularity of classical music on reality television shows. The organisers are also expecting celebrities from tinseltown to attend the performance that starts from 7.30 am and wraps up at 11 pm.
The representative asserts, "For all those who cry that classical music does not get its due. This is the moment to come and express their solidarity."
