Reduce your office’s carbon footprint

DNA suggests ways to make sure you lead a green corporate life.

Bright spark: The easiest transition a regular office can make to going green is replacing incandescent bulbs with Energy Star-rated light bulbs and fixtures, which use at least two-thirds less energy than regular bulbs. Timers or motion sensors can be installed so that lights go off automatically when not needed.

Switch off: When leaving office for the day, turn off your computer and unplug it. If you don’t, you’re still burning energy. When taking short breaks during the day, setting your computer on standby can cut energy use by 70%. Remember, screen savers are not energy savers.

Reuse not refuse: The company can make it a policy to invest in energy-saving computers, monitors and printers, and create as little e-waste as possible. That can be achieved by donating old, functional computers that are less than five years old, to organisations that refurbish them and find new homes for them. Consider replacing your desktop computer with a laptop, which is the most energy-efficient computer/monitor combination.

Print path: Consider using a dot matrix, impact, or inkjet printer over a laser printer as those use 80 to 95% less energy, while providing a satisfactory quality for many applications. Companies can also switch to a lighter stock of paper, or alternatives made from bamboo, hemp, organic cotton or kenaf. Recycle toner and ink cartridges and buy manufactured ones.

Paper-cut: Embrace digital documents. Read and file documents electronically rather than printing paper copies. It can be incorporated into office policy to post employee manuals and similar materials online, rather than distributing printed copies. They’re easier to update too. Use whiteboards or overhead projectors to display meeting agendas rather than printing and distributing them.

Grow green: Make sure your office has at least one large plant in it or small plants in cubicles. It will not only beautify the office, but also recycle indoor air.

Zero waste: Keep a mug and bottle at the office, so you won’t have to reach for disposable glasses for water and coffee. Whenever possible, pack a lunch for the office. This will involve significantly less packaging.

Virtual travel: Videoconferencing and other technological solutions reduce employee travel.

Commute wisely: Make it a habit to carpool, cycle or opt for public transport to work. Telecommuting or working four extended days (as opposed to five) can also help you decrease your carbon footprint.

Eco-charity: Donate unused books, pens, cell phones, computers and other supplies to schools, charity stores, libraries or nursing homes. Otherwise, they will find their way to the dumps.

Walk it:
Your brain gets exercise all day, so why not exercise your body? Take the stairs instead of the lift.
