Teens in Pune are more tech savvy compared to those in other cities. A recent survey by information technology (IT) major, Tata Consultancy Service (TCS), found that 88% of teens in Pune are into social networking, higher than the all-India average. Besides, 81% use Facebook, more than in Mumbai, Bangalore
and Delhi.

The second annual ‘Web 2.0 generation survey’ conducted by TCS polled over 10,000 schoolchildren in the age group of 12 to 18 years in 11 cities across India in 2009-10.

In Pune, Google is the clear favourite for seeking information for 92% of the respondents, followed by Wikipedia (84%). The survey found that 88% have home access to computers and 62% are cyber cafe regulars.

Teens in the city are more inclined towards gadgets. Pune has higher penetration of gadgets among teens, who have affinity to brands like Apple, among others. Another interesting finding is that 55% of the teens polled in Pune follow study blogs, higher than in other cities.

Ajoy Mukherjee, vice president and head of global human resources at TCS said, “Nearly half of India’s total population is under the age of 20 and classified under the youth category, creating a group of over 459 million, more than the entire population of the United States.

“We plan to use these findings to understand the next generation better. It will help us not just to find the best students, but also guide us as to how and what we communicate with them,” he added.

The survey found that in Pune, IT and engineering are the preferred career options. Medicine also scores higher than the all-India average. Teens are interested in going abroad for graduation.

For them new skills, experiences, interesting work places and travel are important attributes while evaluating career options. For the teens, Rahul Gandhi emerged the clear favourite politician, as in most cities.
