Politician Priya Dutt may have been conspicuously absent from actor brother Sanjay Dutt’s iftaar parties, but she says that people are reading too much into it.

“If you go back in time, you will realise that I have never attended any film parties. Sanjay, my sister Namrata and I lead separate lives. We do not interfere in each other’s matters.  Besides, what will we do at a film event?” questions Priya.

When queried if she would be there at the celebrations when the babies arrive for Sanjay and his wife Maanyata, she shoots back, “Of course, I’ll be there. In fact I’ll be there before anyone else!”

The young politician reveals that she’s  contemplating opening a Twitter account for her friend, Namrata Singh Gujral’s film, 1 A Minite to to create awareness on cancer.  Priya, who features in the film, states it was a one-off.

“Commercial films? Never!” she laughs. “I keep getting requests to ‘play myself’ but I don’t see myself doing that at all.”

She agreed for her friend’s film as it dealt with cancer. “I was just a kid when my mother succumbed to cancer but I distinctly remember my father telling us (Sanjay, Namrata and herself) not to shed a tear when people came visiting.

He said, ‘Cry as much as you want in your room. A section of those who will visit will probably come just to gaze at film stars. So don’t show your emotions in front of them.’”

It was tough but Priya says that the valuable advice helped her sister and her get a grip on their emotions when in public view from then on, and she is hoping that her experience will help other families cope with the disease as well.
