It was a few years ago when on a whim, Harinakshi Mistry picked up a few paints and decided to give her old plates a new look. “I had a design in mind, just followed the instructions and though I made a single colour pattern, it turned out looking really good,” she reveals.

Quite a variety
Ever since, Harinakshi’s thought process has widened to include using more colours and free hand design on a variety of pottery, plates, mugs and scarves and she’s graduated from an
experimenter to a patron. Says the artist, “I find inspiration in everyday life.

Travel also provides some great ideas and I love doodling my thoughts in a little sketchbook. I’m a student of Ikebana and Bonsai and I like florals but I’m soon also going to create geometric patterns on silk scarves.”

Her exhibitions include painted silk scarves, painted terracotta plates, mugs and porcelain plates. And people can order saris or table cloths and tiled panels from her.

How it’s done
Harinakshi claims that porcelain art can be really difficult as it gets dried very quickly so the colour application needs to be fast. “For every batch of porcelain baked, the oven has to be thoroughly cooled before the next batch is placed inside. Application of colour also needs to be extremely quick as the colour dries very fast. Repeated application of colour may cause the previous layers to peel. The final product (after baking and cooling), can be cleaned using soap and water as the glaze formed is resistant to washing and mild abrasions,” she reveals.

While Harinakshi started out at home in a small way, she’s now invested in professional ovens for her work. “It’s to get the desired effect I want as the trick lies in knowing how to handle the colours,” she smiles.
