Delhi based designer JJ Valaya, known for his embroideries and exquisite bridal trousseau, is all set to synergise his two passions — fashion and photography on the ramp at the Lakme Fashion Week tomorrow.

The latter, an unknown side to him, is something he’s exploring more and more this year. Not many know that much before Valaya became famous as a designer, he was a fine arts photographer.

Talking about the synergizing fashion and photography for his collection Tasveer, he says he wanted to capture the evolution in the world of photography in a unique way. “It’s a festive trousseau collection inspired by photography and the changing colours of the palette. It showcases the evolving palettes in photography from black and white to sepia, colourful to digital,” he elaborates.

When the designer had showcased the same line at the Delhi Couture Week recently, it got controversial when Valaya was accused of plagiarism for having copied mosaic pattern that had earlier been done by designer Nachiket Barve. “The issue was sorted. These things don’t make any difference to me now; I have seen much more in life already.  In the creative field, there are many things to get inspired from that no one can trademark anything,” says the designer.

Over the years, Valaya’s signature style has come to be synonymous with couture. Didn’t he ever feel the need to deviate from it? “People have liked us for all these years, so I don’t see the need to deviate from what we’ve been doing for so long. Besides, even today the top couturiers are the same as 20 years back,” says Valaya adding, “Let’s not forget that in India, bridal wear provides the biggest business. And there are no two ways to that.”
