Twenty one years old, jewellery designer Pavithra Ananthanarayanan steps into the glimmering world of gemstones with her first collection called the Blue Nile…

Why did you choose to base your first collection on the Nile?
I had gone to Egypt last year and was mesmerised by the Nile; plus blue is a colour we all relate to easily. So, when it was time for me to put together my first collection, I decided to dedicate it to the Nile and called it the Blue Nile.

Tell us a bit more about the collection that is on display at Collage?
There are approximately 20 pieces in this collection; each is different from the other. I have created earrings, bracelets, finger rings etc, in blue stones, such as blue sapphire, light blue aquamarine, blue topaz etc, in their various shades and broken the monotony with other stones including moonstone and opal. The jewellery is in white gold and I have used a smattering of silver, but not too much.

How did you get into jewellery designing?
I always wanted to be a jewellery designer and have even studied for it. Then I got an opportunity with Studio Tara and took it up. My boss is very open to new ideas and there is a match of thought process there.

What next?
I haven’t started work on a new collection yet. But I am always working. Even the Blue Nile collection was a culmination of ideas that I have been putting down on paper for a while. I think it’s really important to give some form to one’s ideas because otherwise it won’t quite materialise the way you like it.

Are you open to the idea of customising jewellery?
We don’t really do customisations but if there is a client who’s been buying from us for years, we might consider making a few changes for them. You can’t quite change a specific piece anyway; a new one has to be made.

When you see your first collection, does it make you happy or do you think you could have done it differently?
Yes, I like what I see. But one has to keep in mind that there is going to be some difference between what you start out conceptualising and what is eventually manufactured. But I think the final products are good; in fact, each piece is different and has its own traits. The most we’ve done is perhaps matched a earring with a bracelet, but no two are alike.
