It was a night of silver-tinted memories for Nita Ambani, interestingly set amidst diamonds, rubies and antique gold. Nita, who was present for the launch of a wedding jewellery store, recalled the time when she herself was shopping for it.

“It was a family affair, as every Indian can understand. I was accompanied by my grandmother, my kaki, masi, besides ofcourse my mother, to buy the wedding set. Back then I had a very limited budget. I can’t even say how much,” she demurs.

But ask the wife of India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani about the most precious jewellery she owns today and she replies after just a moment’s pause, “This was 25 years ago. He (Mukesh) proposed to me on Peddar road, in the middle of all that traffic. Immediately after we set about hunting for a ring and landed up at one of the shops at the Oberoi. It was a beautiful little diamond ring — I still remember that it cost around Rs 18,700. Even today, it’s the most priceless piece of jewellery I own. Not that there’s a dearth of sentiment attached to some of the other things I own — from my mother’s side, my grandmothers jewellery which is antique, has been given to me. I also treasure the jewellery I got from Mukesh’s family for my wedding.”
