Nishi Rehman, owner of Kahawa, an art and craft and design one-stop shop, gives us affordable style tips that young Bangaloreans and students can use to spice up their home.

1. Low lighting is a simple way of changing the look of a room. Students can use Eco-friendly lighting that is affordable yet attractive.

2. Rugs can change the ambience of a room in a jiffy. They add a warm feeling and even a single large rug, in a bright colour or with patterns can make a big difference. Rugs are also low maintenance additions.

3. Curtains are must — plenty of shops offer affordable yet interesting colours and prints that can transform how your room will eventually look

4. One sure shot way to change the look of a place is by adding plants. One can stick to small plants in small pots. You can also get creative and have a little stone garden in the corner of a room or in the balcony if you have one.

5. Another way to add to the look of a room is by painting one wall in a bold single colour that will contrast the colour of the rest of the walls. But decide carefully because once you’ve painted it, there’s no going back unless you change it again.

6. Cushions with bright covers can add a lot of life to your room. A variety of covers are available at places such as lifestyle stores and high streets.

7. To add a personal touch, you can put some different kinds of art on the wall. It doesn’t have to be an expensive painting but framed cartoon strips, posters, caricatures or photographs you might have taken or got.

8. Candles add layers to a room. Scented or aromatheraphy ones, in bright colours, will not only come handy when the power goes out but also help to make your room look stylish.

9. Find floors lamps in simple bamboo with paper shades. They are affordable and can give an artsy look to the event.

10. If you’re on a tight budget, forget the big stores. The small hole-in-the-wall shops in the city often stock up on interesting and affordable home décor stuff.
